A test fit of the truck’s bed wood indicated we had performed a flawless job of raising the bed wood high enough so the truck’s rear end would never bottom out against the boards. Last work to do is to fit the outside boards around the Dan Carpenter bed tubs and create a rear seal for the gap created by the raised bed. Blind bolts were used to mount the boards and retain the stainless bed strips.  This procedure takes time but is one heck of a lot better than having a big bump in the middle of the bed.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/img_6765.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_6765</image:title><image:caption>15-	With the bed’s sub frame and finish welded, the welds were ground flat where they would be flush when touching wood. The frame was then reinstalled into the truck’s bed and bolted  in place. A thread locker was used to ensure the bolts would never back out.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/img_6762.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_6762</image:title><image:caption>10-	Another vertical support strut was added to the very front of the bed frame and it now became rigid enough to actually walk on…not that we would tempt fate. This is where those poster boards paid off as we removed the bed sub frame to finish weld it outside of the truck to ensure against damage to the bed’s paint and powder coated chassis.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/img_6761.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_6761</image:title><image:caption>10 &amp; 11- Another flat plate was mounted to a bed bolt and a support strut cut to fit from the plate to the height of the bed frame. This one is just forward of the wheel tub for added support.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/img_6760.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_6760</image:title><image:caption>8 &amp; 9 Taking advantage of the rear frame bolt holes, a flat, square of metal was bolted into place on both sides. A short section of square tubing was then placed to form a support strut for the rear of the bed frame. Again, it is just tack welded at this time.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/img_6758.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_6758</image:title><image:caption>7-	Poster board was taped to the bed side to ensure the frame rails did not scratch the painted bed sides as the rails were adjusted for fit and leveling. You also get a good look at the supports which are tack welded into place, being just long enough to place the framework higher than the frame.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/img_6757.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_6757</image:title><image:caption>6- Critical to the fit of the bed is the creation of stanchions which will make the bed boards high enough to clear the frames stepped rails as well as ensuring the bed boards remain level.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/img_6756.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_6756</image:title><image:caption>5- Best part of using a light-duty MIG welder is the ability to use it with a standard 3-prong plug. The MIG uses a tank of Argon gas which also eliminates welding spatter, so there is very little clean-up.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/img_6755.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_6755</image:title><image:caption>4- The main rails which run the full length of the bed are next to be installed. Yes that is a 5.4L Supercharged Lightning engine. </image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/img_8907.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_8907</image:title><image:caption>13-With the bed now fit perfectly to the chassis and the wheel/tire package properly fit to the bed by using Dan Carpenter Specialties bed tubs for an additional 4-inches of clearance, this step is done. As you can see, there is another article in the making to show you how the bed wood was installed
seamlessly over that huge step in the rear frame rails. </image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/img_8913.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_8913</image:title><image:caption>12- With the fenders clamped into place, I then took a look underneath the truck. I was surprised to see just how low the chassis was to the ground and how much room there was between the inside of the tire and the chassis. You guessed it; I opted for even fatter rear tires at this point! </image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/img_8899.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_8899</image:title><image:caption>11- Now for the final test, the stock width steel rear fender was installed onto the bed side with the big wheels and tires in place. The fit was perfect even with the suspension aired all the way down. </image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/img_8898.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_8898</image:title><image:caption>10-The cool part about all this welding is that it is hidden by the fenders, so the spot welded do not have to be ground. As you can see, the tires will clear the tubs even when the rear end articulates, such as when you drive diagonally across a drive way ramp, such as at a gas station. </image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/img_8897.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_8897</image:title><image:caption>9-The big test was next as we hauled the bedsides now fit with bed tubs back to Total Cost Involved for a test fit to ensure the fat tires and 10 inch wide billet rims would clear the bed with the suspension all the way down. The fit was perfect without the insides of the bed being compromised. </image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/img_8896.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_8896</image:title><image:caption>8- We took a lot of extra time to ensure we measured, marked and welded the inner bed tubs in the proper position into the bed sides. I highly suggest you mark the outside and front of the bed just to make sure you have the right tub on the correct bed side as shown. </image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/img_8895.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_8895</image:title><image:caption>7- Dale used a TIG welder with the least amount of heat to prevent the bed sides from warping from the heat. One drilled hole would be filled, then one a distance away was next to allow the metal to cool evenly without warping. No problems with the TIG method of welding for this job. </image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/img_8894.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_8894</image:title><image:caption>6- Now it is time to remove the heavy primer only from the spots where the bed tubs will be permanently welded to the bed sides. A course grinder does this job quickly. </image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/img_8893.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_8893</image:title><image:caption>5-Again, you cannot be too careful when placing the bed tubs properly in the area to be welded. It is easier to mark and check you measurements several times than it is to redo them. Dale marks the location of the holes in preparation of removing the bed side’s primer.&#13;

The flat bar was installed onto the front brake studs and quickly established that there was plenty of wheel/tire clearance. Bill was quick to point out that these old trucks came with relatively narrow rims and skinny tires, so another consideration is to check for clearance when the wheels are turned lock to lock, right to left.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/img_8164.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_8164</image:title><image:caption>10. The wheel measurements are then transferred to the threaded rod and the nuts are set accordingly.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/img_8162.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_8162</image:title><image:caption>9-Next on the list is to check the front wheels and tires to ensure they also will fit the truck. Again, the overall width of the wheel and inflated tire are recorded along with the back spacing of the wheel. </image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/img_8157.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_8157</image:title><image:caption>8-Once again the flat bar is mounted onto the brake drum and the rod is slowly rotated into position. We aren’t just lucky, but good as the wheel/tire combo with the unique off-set will clear with no problems. As a matter of fact, Bill has discovered that he can also position the wheels closer to the fender utilizing thin spacers if he so desires.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/img_8155.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_8155</image:title><image:caption>7-Next we will measure twice and check twice to ensure the wheel back spacing is transferred to the threaded rod and again, indicated by the placement of the outside nut. We used a marker to ensure this measurement is again correct. With a sharp eye, you can see Bill set the rod with 6 ½ inches on one side and 4 ½ inches on the other with is the overall width of the wheel and inflated tire.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/img_8152.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_8152</image:title><image:caption>6-With the truck secured on jack stands, this is an image looking from the floor up into the rear fender. As you can clearly see, the 10-inch rim, represented by the placing of the nut onto the threaded rod, will clear and so will the bulge of the fat tire as represented by the end of the threaded rod. Close yes, but it will clear. No guessing when it comes to clearing the inside of the bed and frame rails. Now, how about the fender lip?</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/img_8149.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_8149</image:title><image:caption>5-For the initial measurement, the 11-inch long threaded rod is centered with 5-1/2-inches protruding from each side of the bar. The inside nut is set at 4-inches indicating the spacing of the wheel center using the measurement taken earlier from the actual wheel.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://stevestillwell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/img_8147.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_8147</image:title><image:caption>5. Using measurements taken from the wheel, the two jam nuts are used to lock the bar stock in place and a nut is positioned so that it is 4-inches out from the flat bar indicating the alloy wheel has a 4-inch back space.
